We’ve curated a list of sporting clubs and venues in Carlisle as well as like minded groups to help you make the most of your time at Cumbria University and your stay at u-student Carlisle. 

Carlisle and District Divers

Meeting at Wigton’s swimming pool most Tuesday nights at 8pm the club welcomes divers new and experienced. Socialising and holidays form part of their calendar as well as qualified instruction. Over 18s are invited to come along to the swimming pool for an introductory scuba diving session. 

Border City Wheelers 

The club  have been cycling in the Carlisle district since 1925. A friendly club who welcome new members of all ages and abilities for time trials, road racing, grass track racing, cyclo-cross and reliability rides as well as a weekly Sunday morning meet at 9.30 at the Crown Inn.

Carlisle and District Rambling and Fell Walking 

Walkers of all ages and abilities met to enjoy leisurely walks, gentle fells, hills and mountains in the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, the Borders and Northumberland. New members are welcomed and walks organised for every Wednesday and Sunday throughout the year and during May, June, July and August there are walks every Thursday evening. 

Meerkats Netball Club Carlisle

Meeting at the University of Cumbria, on Wednesdays at 8-9.30pm the Meerkats are an amature netball team who have been playing at senior level since the 1980s. Competing across the region the experienced team are a force to be reckoned with!

Yad Moss Ski Lift 

Established in 1975 with a claim to fame of being the longest ski lift in England, Yad (which is an old Pennine word for pit pony) Moss allows skiers to enjoy 4 kilometres of varied intermediate skiing and plenty of characterful off-piste. Maintained by volunteers, work parties take part throughout the year to ensure the lift and slopes are in peak condition when the snow hits! 

Carlisle Villa Amateur Boxing Club

Formed in 1993 and named after the Currock Villa Boys Club where they are based, classes take place throughout the week from beginners to senior level plus HIIT classes. On Saturday mornings the club runs Mindfit – a free initiative designed to help anyone suffering from mental health issues.

Chatsworth Tennis Club 

Situated close to the centre of Carlisle the club provides excellent indoor and outdoor facilities for both members and non-members. Junior and senior sections and a comprehensive coaching programme catering to players of all ages and abilities the club has around 250 members.  

Carlisle Rugby Club 

Fielding 17 teams, the club have seen member Chris Harris selected for British and Irish Lions squad tour to South Africa this summer. Fixtures throughout the season (rules permitting), discount tickets at other clubs and an on site bar open throughout the week.

Carlisle Cricket Club 

Cricket at Carlisle can be traced back as far as 1828 when the Carlisle Patriot newspaper reported on a match in which Carlisle had beaten Cockermouth. Now a busy club with fixtures across the summer season, licensed bar and a beautiful function room to hire.

The Yoga Studio Carlisle 

Carlisle’s dedicated and premier Yoga Studio and School, set in a tranquil beautiful 300 year old barn in the heart of the city. Hosting 40 classes per week led by experienced teachers. The studio also hosts online yoga classes & workshops. Offering beginners courses through to full counted primary Ashtanga Yoga.
