At only 23 years of age Alex Laffey finds himself behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta S2000 A7 Class Rally Car for the 2013 MSA Asphalt Rally Championship with the help of student accommodation provider U-Student.
Alex who graduated from the University of Central Lancashire with a degree in Motorsport Logistics and Management is tremendously proud to be driving in full U-Student colours and hopes to go from strength to strength gaining in experience, confidence and all importantly pace across each round of the Championship.
Originating from Carnoustie in Scotland Alex says “The fact my course was so closely related to Rallying was a great help for me because I was spending so much time rallying during my studies, luckily because my course was on motorsports they were much more understanding when I was away rallying so much and they gave me lots of extra time which was really helpful.”
The Championship involves nine rounds between March – October across some of the best sealed surface rallying available throughout England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Isle of Man. The first round was hosted in Wales ‘ The Tour of Epynt ‘ covering 75 miles in seven stages which gave Alex and Co Driver Jack Morton their first competitive opportunity in the U-Student S2000 Ford Fiesta afterwards Alex said “The conditions were slippery and pretty horrible. It was tricky getting used to the car for the first time but we came through pretty well and gained great experience racking up important mileage in the car.”
Team Laffey are hoping to build on the momentum of their encouraging first event at the next stage of the championships at the Manx National Rally in The Isle of Man. The Manx National Rally begins on 10th May 2013 with two days of spectacular racing events covering 120 miles over 14 stages around the island. The Rally is now in its 34th year and the team are eager to impress at this prestigious event.
Alex says “We’re hoping to pick up more pace in the next stage. The car we have is quick enough to be near the top, with this car we aim to build throughout the year gaining pace and experience with every drive “.
Alex’s interest in rallying began as a spectator watching the Rally World Championships in Wales as a youngster however it was when a family friend began sponsoring a small Rally team that he really caught the motorsport bug and decided to get behind the wheel.
Alex recalls his first driving experience “ I ended up renting a car and doing my first event in Penrith, Cumbria in 2009 when I was just 18 and from then on I was addicted and just couldn’t stop.” Motorsport became Alex’s passion and racing is what he lives for.
