Summer in Sunderland – a student’s guide

Summer is fast approaching, which means many people’s thoughts are turning to how they’ll spend those sunshine filled, carefree months. If you are a student studying in Sunderland, don’t make plans to spend summer at home just yet. Sunderland comes to life during summer, with a number of events and festivals to enjoy. Discover the events in Sunderland and the surrounding area that should take pride of place in your calendar this year.

Sunderland Food & Drink Festival

Love great food and drink? Then you’ll adore Sunderland Food & Drink Festival. Taking place on Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd June 2019, the festival sees appearances from celebrity chefs and a host of tasty treats from local and international kitchens come to the city centre.

You’ll find stalls in Keel Square, Market Square, Blandford Street and High Street West, plus live music and street entertainment. The festival is free entry, just bring an empty stomach!

Rum & Reggae Festival

Taking place in nearby Newcastle on Saturday 22nd June 2019, the Rum & Reggae Festival is the perfect way to start your summer. The event promises the widest collection of rums accompanied by the smoothest selection of music. You can enjoy performances and carnival dancers all day as well as a mix of traditional Jamaican food. Artists are still yet to be confirmed.

If you’re more of a fan of gin than rum, you can attend the Great British Gin Festival nearby on the same day. Here you can sample more than 100 different gins from all over the globe.

Kubix Festival

Kubix Festival is coming to Sunderland’s Herrington Country Park on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th July 2019. The festival sees a number of old school favourites return to the stage, including Five, S Club, Whigfield, 911 and Artful Dodger, with more acts to be announced.

Sunderland Airshow

Celebrating its 31st anniversary this year, the Sunderland Airshow offers a fantastic spectacle and a fascinating insight into the city’s roots in aviation.

From the 26th to 28th July 2019 you can enjoy a host of activities on the ground as well as see a number of aircrafts in the skies above. The weekend isn’t just an opportunity to witness your favourite aircrafts in action, there’s an exciting programme of entertainment planned too. The Airshow is held on the Seaburn and Roker seafront meaning you can take in the stunning seaside setting and enjoy several exhilarating displays.

Great North Run

The planet’s most popular half marathon is back for another year, and if you want to get involved there’s still time to get training. The Great North Run begins in Newcastle on Sunday 8th September 2019 before finishing on the seafront in South Shields. Supporters and spectators will also find plenty to do and to see around the course on the day.
