Exam Season Survival Guide – 5 tips to stay sane and actually succeed

Exam season can feel like a lot. Between revision, deadlines, pressure and trying to keep some kind of normal routine, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. The good news is that doing well does not mean studying every hour of the day. It is about building habits that help you stay focused, rested and in control.

Here are five simple exam season tips to help you revise, stay focused and avoid burning yourself out.

1. Study smarter, not longer during exam season

Long study sessions can feel productive, but your brain is not built for six-hour revision marathons. Try breaking your revision into focused chunks of around 25 to 50 minutes, followed by short breaks.

This helps you stay more focused and makes revision feel less overwhelming. Pick one topic, give it your full attention, then step away for a few minutes before moving on.

2. Sleep is revision

It is tempting to stay up all night before an exam, but lack of sleep can make it harder to remember what you have learned. Your memory needs rest to process and store information properly.

Aim for solid sleep, especially in the days before your exams. A rested brain will usually do more for you than an extra few hours of tired revision.

3. Make a realistic plan

A revision plan does not need to be perfect. In fact, it is better if it is realistic.

Focus on the subjects or topics that matter most, then build in time for breaks, meals and bad days. Things will not always go exactly to plan, and that is fine. A flexible plan is much easier to stick to than one that falls apart the first time life gets in the way.

4. Move your body

You do not need to do a full workout to feel the benefit. Even a 10-minute walk can clear your head, reduce exam stress and help you reset between revision sessions.

Exams can make you feel like you have to sit at your desk all day, but you are not a robot. Getting outside, stretching or moving around your room can make a real difference to how you feel.

5. Be kind to yourself

Exam season is stressful, and not every day will go perfectly. That does not mean you are failing.

Progress is better than perfection. One bad day does not cancel out all the work you have already done. Keep going, take things one step at a time and remember that doing your best is enough. Our guide to how to avoid burnout during exam season has more practical ways to manage pressure when revision starts to feel like too much.
