You may have heard “Blue Monday” being thrown around this week, with the idea that it’s the most depressing day and week of the year. However, this doesn’t need to be true.
‘Blue Monday’ was a term created in 2004 as part of a new marketing campaign for a travel company and has since stuck, to tap into consumer’s January blues. While there’s no scientific evidence behind Blue Monday, you may still be feeling those January blues whilst you wait for the bloom of spring. That’s why we’ve compiled some tips to help you tackle the winter blues, stay motivated, and look after your mental health.
1. Start Your Day with a Routine
The first five minutes of your day can set the tone for how you feel. Try putting your alarm across the room to get you up and moving. Plan a morning routine that makes you feel good, whether that’s a quick exercise session, listening to your favourite podcast, or making a warm breakfast.
2. Plan for the future year
Remind yourself of what you’re working towards: time off with family and friends, and fewer looming deadlines. Organising your assignments and tackling tasks early will make the year ahead feel much more manageable. Even a little progress each day adds up, and you’ll thank yourself later.
3. Light Up Your Space
The lack of daylight can really impact your mood and focus. Make the most of natural light by working near windows and keep your room well lit, it can really help with focus and energy levels. A warm, well-lit room can make winter studying feel a lot less daunting.
4. Stay Connected
Winter can feel isolating, especially with fewer daylight hours. Reach out to friends for study sessions in the library or plan a movie night to recharge together. Staying connected can make a big difference in how you feel about the season.
5. Take Breaks for Movement
The cold might make it tempting to sit at your desk all day, but moving around can help combat winter fatigue. Even a brisk walk or quick stretch indoors can lift your mood and boost your productivity.
6. Break Up Tasks to Avoid Overwhelm
Big assignments can feel daunting, especially with winter adding to your mental load. Break your work into smaller, manageable tasks, and celebrate each one you complete. By doing a little each day, you’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish without feeling burnt out. Find more about revision tips here.
7. Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To
Plan little rewards for finishing assignments, whether that’s a coffee break with friends or watching a movie. Knowing there’s a treat at the end of a big study session can help you power through those tough days.
Winter can feel like a challenging season, but by staying on top of your assignments and building healthy habits, you’ll be ready to tackle it. Getting through the workload now means you’ll be able to relax. So, get a head start, stay motivated, and don’t let the winter blues hold you back!
